An Interview With the owner, Amy snyder

Q: When did PT Plus open?
A: We started our practice in April 2002.  I joined my parents when I moved home from Washington DC.  I had graduated one year earlier.  I had so much to learn.  It was initially very intimidating to work with my Dad, he was a guru and had so many years of knowledge and experience.  Through the years I grew in my clinical and business skills.

Q: What is your earliest memory of helping your parents in the clinics?
A: As a kid I remember swinging on gait bars and rolling on swiss balls in the clinics.  PT Gyms are full of fun "toys."  My mom worked in a nursing home.  She brought my siblings and myself to Christmas parties and we'd talk with her patients. I started working in the clinics as a receptionist during my high school and college years.

Q: When did you know that you wanted to become a physical therapist?
A: I decided to pursue a career as a physical therapist when I was in high school.  I knew I wanted to work in healthcare.  Initially I resisted being a PT, because I didn't want to be anything like my parents!  However, the more I learned about the profession and the more that I worked in the clinics, it became clear that this would be a great fit for me too.  Plus, I did want to be like all of the younger and cooler therapists who worked for them!

Q: What motivates your work as a therapist and as a business owner?
A: I have always felt called to server others.  As a therapist, I love helping my patients to make wellness changes that help them to live their best lives.  As a business owner, I hope that I am able to provide more therapists with the opportunity I was given, to work in a professional setting that serves the patient first and provides the professional autonomy to work at the top of their licenses.  PTs have so much to offer the healthcare system and our communities.  I want more people to know that!

Q: What makes PT Plus unique from other physical therapy clinics?
A: The PT Plus difference is in our values.  Local - I believe that community-based care and the freedom to choose your healthcare provider are important factors in building a healthier community.  Service - at PT Plus we serve our patients first.  We also serve each other.  By lifting others up, we encourage everyone to live their best lives.  Excellence - Everyone at PT Plus is committed to lifelong learning.  Tomorrow we will be better than we are today.  Perfection is not our expectation, growth is.

Q: What is the most rewarding part of being a local practice owner?
A: The most rewarding moments as a practice owner come when you step back from the crazy hustle and bustle and try to take in the number of lives our company has touched.  It is one of the most humbling feelings to realize the ripple effect that our collective work can have on our communities.  I feel so lucky to work alongside colleagues who are committed to making a difference in our world.

Q: What are your hopes and dreams for PT Plus?
A: My hopes and dreams for PT Plus are that we continue our mission of Touching Lives throughout SE Wisconsin.  In true Midwestern fashion, when someone asks, who's your physical therapist, everyone will answer..."My PT is at PT Plus, they are the best, you should go and see my people there.  They'll take good care of you."

Celebrate National Gardening Day!

Gardening is a great way to enjoy the warmer weather, reduce stress levels and improve overall mood. However, it can be difficult for someone to enjoy this wonderful activity if they struggle with back pain. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you keep your back healthy and safe while gardening:

  1. Warm Up! Yes, believe it or not it is important to get a good warmup routine before doing any kind of gardening or yardwork, just like you would for a sport. Take about 10 minutes to walk around for half of this time and do a few stretches for the other half.

  2. Keep close to the ground. Avoid repetitive bending movements by simply using a cushioned kneeling pad to get on the ground in an all four position to move around. Engage your core in this position for better spinal alignment.

  3. Garden Smarter, not harder! If you know your back is a problem, use simple tools to your advantage. Use a wheelbarrow instead of carrying heavy bags of dirt across your yard. Use effective shovels/tools that will cut through the ground better instead of pushing with more force or ones that have longer handles to avoid reaching too much. Maybe instead of planting in the ground, get a garden bed that sits above the ground at waist level so you don't have to bend all the time!

  4. Take breaks! It is tempting to get everything done all together but know your stamina and your tolerance. When you start getting fatigued, your muscles don't perform as well, which puts joints at risk of increased stress. Take the 10-20 minute break or go back at it later in the day!

  5. Use good Form. When lifting bags of dirt, straddle the bag, bend your knees and let your butt sink to the ground keeping your chest forward. If you are shoveling, keep a tandem or split like stance when lifting the dirt and let your legs do the work. Avoid tossing dirt to the side by rotating your body, move the feet instead! When pushing your foot on the shovel, keep your knee bent instead of straight and use your body, not just your leg.

Keep these tips in mind and happy gardening!

These PT Pro Tips are brought to you by our West Bend Therapist, Peter Eidsmoe PT, DPT.

Ed Schuster is our PT Plus Occupational Therapist. If you haven't had a chance to by treated by Ed yourself, just take Rachel S. at her word,

"Ed Schuster is the absolute best! He’s a great listener and partner in helping you figure out what’s causing your pain. The appointments are a good combo of helping decrease pain and increase strength/addressing the root problem. Ed is always willing to try new ways of treatment to fit you and your body the best!"

PT - Not Just For Adults

When you think of physical therapy you might think of an injured athlete, someone recovering from surgery, or someone with a chronic medical problem. We're here to let you know that you should think of kids, too. Physical therapists are trained to work with patients of any age. Some even specialize in pediatrics. Here are a few things PTs can help kids with:

Coordination Disorders and Gross Motor Delays
Some children are delayed in hitting their gross motor milestones - things like sitting up on their own, rolling, standing, walking, jumping and running. Other children show difficulty with coordination - activities like hand motions to "wheels on the bus", feeding themselves with utensils, moving awkwardly or slowly, or even tripping or bumping into things a lot. Physical therapists can help encourage development of gross motor skills and coordination to help these kids get back on track.

Cerebral Palsy
This is the most common motor disability in childhood. The symptoms can vary from moving a little awkwardly to being unable to walk and needing assistance for almost all activities. There are also different types - the most common causes stiffness in the muscles, but other types affect control of movements, balance or coordination. No matter the type or severity of cerebral palsy, a physical therapist can help with things like stretching, exercise, bracing, and equipment like a wheelchair if needed.

Torticollis
Torticollis is a postural issue that usually becomes noticeable shortly after birth. Babies with torticollis typically hold their heads tipped one direction and rotated towards the opposite side. This is caused by a tight neck muscle. Research has shown that early referral to a physical therapist is a very effective treatment. The PT usually shows the baby's caregivers ways to gently stretch the neck, and activities to encourage the baby to move his or her head into a more neutral position.

Pelvic Floor Issues
People don't commonly think of pelvic floor issues in children, but you might be surprised at how common they are. The most common symptom is chronic constipation, but pelvic floor problems can also show up as urinary incontinence, bed wetting, or needing to go to the bathroom frequently. A physical therapist can help with education for the child and their family, exercise, and sometimes even the use of biofeedback to help the child learn to better control their pelvic floor muscles.

Pain and Injuries
Although kids have a list of problems specific to them, don't forget about regular old pain and injuries. Your physical therapist can treat an ankle sprain, painful joint, or athletic injury in a child just like they can an adult.

Sometimes kids and even babies need some help with movement. From now on, when you think of your physical therapist, don't leave kids out of the picture!
