Pilates is a form of low intensity exercise which focuses on both strength and flexibility. Pilates was developed by an individual by the name of Joseph Pilates with the goal of addressing and correcting muscle imbalances with exercise. Two of the main focuses of Pilates are concentration on movement and use of core and low back stabilizers. Exercises in Pilates are developed more for increasing muscle tone and awareness vs. building muscle mass.
What’s great about Pilates is that anyone can do it. Each session is guided by an instructor who is vigilant in watching your every move. There are 34 different exercise sets, all of which can be progressed or regressed to be easier or more difficult. Our colleagues at Absolute Pilates in Brookfield break the exercise sessions in half. The first half of the session is spent with the instructor observing the client move through various exercise sets, looking for any imbalances that they might find. In the second half of the session, those imbalances are corrected with exercise, verbal cueing, and occasional tactile cueing. By the end of the session clients normally report that they feel more in tune with their bodies than when they first came in.
